It is quicker, less mess, and it gets rid of that dated swirly finish for good. If a ceiling or wall is past saving, we re-plaster it properly instead.

Once the damp itself has been dealt with, walls usually need re-plastering to look and feel right again, and getting that stage done well makes all the difference.
